The lifeguard/attendant
“A lifeguard just sits on a chair in the pool and relaxes”. Many of us have heard this statement before.
Long gone are the days of the old-fashioned lifeguard who only had to sit in his chair. A modern swimming pool demands a completely different level of flexibility and commitment from its staff in order to provide the best possible service to all its guests.
The truth is that the job is incredibly versatile and throws the employee into a myriad of different tasks. Cleaning, checking water quality, vacuuming the pools, customer care, first aid, ….. and the list goes on.
In addition, the job requires you to pass the annual lifeguard test, which places great demands on both physical and professional first aid skills.
With us, the lifeguard’s workday is roughly divided into cleaning tasks, instructor work and half days. All our lifeguards are instructors in either baby swimming, water aerobics, wellness massage or hammam massage. In addition, all permanent employees are sauna instructors.
The lifeguard as half guard
The hall guard is responsible for supervising the hall’s guests and ensuring a good and safe environment. This is done primarily through prevention, by stepping in BEFORE an accident occurs. In practical terms, the half guard makes sure that the swimming pool rules are followed, but is also very aware of situations that CAN develop into an accident. This could be children getting into too deep water, dangerous play, or guests who need special supervision.
In the event of an accident, the swimming pool has an alert plan that tells exactly who should do what and in what order. The psychological pressure an accident puts on the individual lifeguard is highly dependent on the extent to which he or she feels equipped for the task.
The half shift is usually in the hall for half an hour at a time. Occasionally the shift can last longer.
Cleaning and maintenance
A large part of a lifeguard’s work revolves around cleaning. Our staff are responsible for cleaning everywhere in the swimming pool, from basement to attic. The fact that the lifeguard handles the cleaning tasks themselves is a great strength as we are with the guests who benefit from our efforts on a daily basis. Any requests or shortcomings can thus be quickly addressed.
My activities
In order to offer our guests baby swimming, water aerobics, saunagus, wellness massage and hammam massage, many of our lifeguards have attended courses in these activities. Yet another facet of the lifeguard’s diverse work.
Technical room in the basement – The heart of the swimming pool
The swimming pool technicians are responsible for ensuring that the technical operation in the basement works optimally.
The pool’s filter systems ensure that the water quality is always top notch. The 3 large sand filters and 2 carbon filters ensure that the 25 m pool’s 1500 m3 of water is cleaned every five hours.
To loosen the dirt from the sand filters, they are backwashed at least once a week. This process reverses the water flow in the filter, so to speak, and directs the impurities into the drain.
In addition to sand and carbon filters, a UV filter, called a Clorminator, is attached to the purification part of the fun pool. In this process, the UV light in the clorminator removes impurities in the water, a process that occurs naturally in outdoor pools.
In addition to maintaining and servicing the swimming pool’s technical installations in the basement, the technicians also perform routine tasks in the swimming pool’s other facilities and in “Café Hyggestunden.”
